SEVEN'S ON YOUR SIDE TONIGHT. DOZENS OF PEOPLE PLEADING WITH A LOCAL NEWSPAPER TO STOP DELIVERING TO THEIR HOMES. BUT THEIR CRIES FELL ON DEAF EARS. SO, THEY CALLED OUR ROSS MCLAUGHLIN FOR HELP.
ROSS MCLAUGHLIN:
FOLKS, HERE'S THE PROBLEM. LOOK AT THIS. EXAMINERS PILING UP IN PEOPLE'S NEIGHBORHOODS. RESIDENTS SAY THEY ARE A NUISANCE. SOME SOGGY, SOAKING WET ALSO A SECURITY RISK BECAUSE IT SAYS "HEY I'M NOT HOME!",
STORY:
Ross: "Looks like an Examiner let me get out and check it out. This looks like the latest one."
YEAH LOOK AT THEM.
Couple: "Look over there."
SOME NEW.
Ross: "Monday February 25."
MANY OLD.
Ross: "This is nasty this is been sitting quite a while."
AS YOU CAN SEE... Shawn: "There's one."
Ross: "Two, three."
Ross: "Looks deceased."
IT'S A BIG PROBLEM.
Ross: "Wow."
Paul Millsback: "They don't stop they just ride by and fling the thing into your yard."
,
SOMETIMES, WHETHER YOU WANT IT OR NOT.
Paul Millsback: "Uck, I just don't want the paper to come."
PAUL MILLSBACK HAS LOGGED 21 CALLS TO THE EXAMINER, STILL THESE FREE PAPERS KEEP ON COMING.
Shawn: "They're everywhere."
PAUL'S BEEN IGNORED.
Paul Millsback: "Everybody says there's nothing we can do."
WHAT? THE EXAMINER'S PUBLISHER IS ON RECORD STATING THAT CARRIERS ARE SUPPOSED TO PICK UP OLD PAPERSLYING AROUND. DOESN'T LOOK LIKE THAT'S WORKING. RED DOTS ON MAILBOXES MEAN NO PAPER BUT WHEN THAT DOESN'T APPEAR TO WORK EITHER.
SO, PEOPLE PUT UP SIGNS.
SO, WHAT'S THE EXAMINER SAYING NOW?
Michael Phelps: "If I only had one complaint a day, it would be a huge problem for me. We're still gonna make mistakes."
,
MICHAEL PHELPS SAYS THEY'LL TRY HARDER.
Michael Phelps: "We absolutley are listening. I really encourage our people to strive for perfection. I don't want to give the newspaper to anybody that doesn't want it."
AND JUST IN TIME, MARYLAND DELEGATE TANYA SHEWELL HAS INTRODUCED LEGISLATION TO STOP THIS. IF THE BILL PASSES, PUBLISHERS OF FREE PAPERS WOULD HAVE TO LISTEN. THEY'D GET 7 DAYS TO STOP DELIVERY OR FACE FINES UP TO 100 DOLLAR FOR EACH TIME THE REQUEST IS NOT HONORED. THAT SHOULD GET THEIR ATTENTION.
Paul Millsback: "Just make it stop that'll make me happy."
OKAY.
Michael Phelps/Examiner Publisher: "He will not get the paper Thursday. I just took care of that. Mr Millsback, I am sorry. I didn't mean to deliver the paper to you after repeated complaints."
ROSS IN STUDIO: THE EXAMINER AND OTHER FREE PUBLICATIONS WANT TO AVOID FINES SO THEY ARE TRYING TO POLICE THEMSELVES. VIRGINIA HAS NO LAWS AND D.C. HAS OFFERED TO STEP IN TO HELP ITS RESIDENTS GET THIS STOPPED. FOLKS, THERE YOU HAVE IT.
