Missing Germantown Boy Found in Basement
posted 1:50 pm Thu February 28, 2008 - Germantown, Md.
A Germantown boy who was reported missing Wednesday has been found safe in a basement crawl space of his home.
ABC 7/NewsChannel 8's Julie Parker reports that 14-year-old Lionel George Youkam was conscious and talking when he was found, but appeared to be in shock. The teen was transported to a local hospital for treatment and observation.
Julie Parker reports she and her photographer, Chris Plater, were in the street when the boy's aunt ran out of the house beckoning to them. When they went inside, they found the family celebrating.
The mother said she had heard knocking in the crawl space and went to investigate. The boy was initially treated by former Prince George's County paramedic and current news reporter Dave Statter. Statter cut a shoelace off Lionel's neck. He says the boy told him "some people were here." An ambulance and emergency responders were called to further evaluate the boy's condition.
Police had searched the home Wednesday, even using a police dog, according to the mother.
The family located the boy just hours after Montgomery County police released a statement confirming detectives were looking into the possibility that 14-year-old Lionel George Youkam had been kidnapped.
Investigators said earlier they had not ruled out foul play because some blood was found inside the home. No explanation for the blood was given after the boy was found alive and well.
Police were concerned because the teen had not run away from home in the past.
Youkam's mother said she had last spoken with her son about 2:30 p.m. Wednesday while he was home alone. When his mom arrived home about 3 p.m., she told police he was not there.
