WSSC Votes to Raise Water Rates
posted 6:29 am Fri February 29, 2008 - WASHINGTON
Water rates are headed higher for customers of the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission.
The six commissioners voted Thursday night to raise rates by 8 percent in July. Average quarterly bills will rise about $11. The increase was a compromise, after commissioners representing Prince George's County argued against a planned 9.5 percent increase.
Meanwhile, the commissioners rejected a proposal from managers for an additional fee to cover the cost of replacing old pipes. Outgoing General Manager Andrew Brunhart warned, however, that failing to adopt the fee threatens the reliability of the system.
Managers say the number of pipe failures will climb without money for replacements.
