Redskins Sign QB Collins
posted 4:03 pm Fri February 29, 2008 - Ashburn, Va.
The Washington Redskins agreed to terms Friday to re-sign quarterback Todd Collins, who led a late run to the playoffs last season but is expected to return as a backup.
Collins took over when Jason Campbell was lost for the season with a dislocated kneecap in the first half against Chicago on Dec. 6. The Redskins won that game, with Collins earning NFC offensive player of the week honors.

The Redskins then won the final three regular season games - with Collins making his first starts in 10 years - to snatch the conference's final playoff berth. The winning streak ended with a loss at Seattle in the first round of the playoffs.

ABC 7 News myTAKE - What's Your Opinion?Collins' regular season numbers were outstanding: 67-of-105 for 888 yards, five touchdowns, no interceptions and a 106.4 rating.

Campbell has since recovered from the injury and will regain the starting job next season, according to new coach Jim Zorn. Collins, therefore, was expected to test the free agent market to look for a job as a starter, but the 36-year-old quarterback decided to remain in Washington.

The signing came on the first day of free agency, traditionally a day in which the Redskins aggressively sign new players to big contracts. But the team this year has said it will be not be very active during the first week of the open market.
