WASHINGTON -
Michael Dickerson faces murder charges in court twelve years after the victim, his girlfriend and mother of his child, disappeared.
Michael Dickerson made his first appearance in District Court Friday, to face two-first degree murder charges. Dickerson is charged with killing Shaquita Bell and Sean Thomas both back in 1996.
Now with new witness testimony investigators believe they have enough evidence to keep Dickerson behind bars with a murder conviction.
Bell's mother, Jackie Winborne, is relieved Dickerson is finally having his day in court, "We finally come to get some closure. Dickerson won't get away with what he's done."
Dickerson has been serving a 15-year sentence for gun crimes and assaulting Bell. She disappeared days before she was supposed to testify against Dickerson for the assault case.
Thomas was found shot multiple times in February of 1996. Bell was last seen with Dickerson on June 27, 1996. Authorities believed Bell was killed because she knew about Dickerson’s connection to Thomas’ murder.
Despite extensive searches, including one just last Summer in Fort Washington, investigators never found a body.
Through it all Winborne kept the quest for justice alive, "I had to keep going cause I always had in the back of mind if she did come home, she'd say Mom you gave up on me. I couldn't give up."
Winborne says for the legions of families who have lost loved ones to violence in D.C. and to never see anyone charged with the killings, "Keep fighting!"
