SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Former Redskin Mel Kaufman has died, ABC 7 Sports has confirmed. He was 50 years old.

Kaufman played for the Redskins (web | news) as a linebacker between 1981 and 1988, including as a starter three times the team went the Super Bowl: 1982, 1983 and 1987. He was also a team captain.

After ending his career on the field, Kaufman stayed with the Redskins as a scouting supervisor. He remained active with many D.C. charities.

Kaufman had been an assistant coach at his alma mater, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, since last spring. His biography described him as "one of the best linebackers to ever play at Cal Poly".

"It¹s a tragedy. He was a good man and a compassionate man," said former Cal Poly head coach Rich Ellerson, who became head coach at Army in December, in a statement. "I pray that the stress of the coaching business wasn't a contributing factor. He was just a good guy, a passionate guy, a Mustang."

Details about Kaufman's death were not immediately available, according to a school spokesperson. An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, according to a statement released by the school.
