WASHINGTON - It was a special day at the White House for 180 D.C. school children who were invited to attend a Black History Month program hosted by first lady Michelle Obama.
The 7th and 8th graders from KIPP DC KEY Academy, Shaw Middle School and Stuart-Hobson Middle School joined first daughters Sasha and Malia Obama and the children of White House staff in the East Room.
Michelle Obama then spoke to the children about Black History Month and important milestones for African Americans involving the White House. Mrs. Obama then told the kids their dreams were attainable, if they get to work on them now.
"We are all very much kids like you guys. We just figured out that one day that our fate was in our own hands," the first lady said. "What are you going to do to make this nation is even greater? And what are you going to do right now in school, and in your neighborhoods, to prepare yourselves to assume responsibility and be good citizens?"
Entertainment was provided by the African American female a cappella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock, which engaged the kids with songs and stories.
