(Sports Network) - Top-seeded and defending champion Vera Zvonareva highlighted Tuesday's first-round winners at the $220,000 Pattaya Open tennis event.
The Russian Zvonareva zipped past fellow countrywoman Ksenia Pervak 6-3, 6-2 on the hardcourts at Dusit Thani Hotel.
Zvonareva, who defeated India's Sania Mirza in last in last year's finale here, will meet Italian Alberta Brianti in the round of 16.
In other Day-2 action involving seeds, No. 4 Yaroslava Shvedova of Kazakhstan leveled Japan's Ayumi Morita 6-2, 6-4 and No. 8 German Julia Goerges grounded Greek qualifier Anna Gerasimou 6-4, 6-4.
Heavy Thai crowd favorite Tamarine Tanasugarn reached the second round by pasting Russian Alla Kudryavtseva 6-1, 6-2. The veteran Tanasugarn, a runner- up here 14 years ago, will face second-seeded German Sabine Lisicki on Wednesday.
Additional opening-round wins came for Kazakhstan's Sesil Karatantcheva, Russian Ekaterina Bychkova, Taipei's Yung-Jan Chan and Kai-Chen Chang, and the aforementioned Brianti.
This week's champion will take home $37,000.
