Immigrant rights groups are lashing out against Prince William County (web|news) 's plan to crackdown on illegal immigrants. As of Monday, Prince William County Police must check the legal status of anyone detained, even pulled over for a traffic offense, if they have a reason to believe they're illegal.
"If there's probable cause, if they're presented with a fictitious driver's license, or they have reason to believe the person is not who they say they are," said Chief Charlie Deane with the Prince William County Police department.
The crackdown aims to combat the tens of thousands of illegal immigrants who've come to the U.S. to work and live.
Residents like Scott White, feel the crackdown is a good idea, "They get to come in, they get to use the resources, and we're paying for it-the taxpayers. And I don't like that."
All 500 plus police officers have undergone training and the chief wants cameras in his cruisers to protect against likely racial profiling lawsuits.
Opponents are gearing up too, handing out cards immigrants can give to police saying they don't have to answer questions.
Nancy Lyall with the organization Mexicans Without Borders said immigrants should be careful, "If they're walking, don't spit on the sidewalk, [they should] keep a very low profile."
