The Magna Carta is back at the National Archives.
The 710-year-old handwritten copy is on permanent loan from David Rubenstein of The Carlyle Group, a private equity firm. The Magna Carta is a 13th century forerunner of the Bill of Rights, guaranteeing human rights in England. Rubenstein purchased it for more than $21 million at a New York auction in December.
The copy was previously owned by a foundation run by Texas billionaire H. Ross Perot and had been on loan to the National Archives since 1984. It was removed in September when the foundation decided to put it up for auction.
Rubenstein said Monday that he learned about the auction the day before it was to happen. He said he purchased it to prevent it from being taken out of the country.
