Severe Weather Topples Trees, Knocks Out Power

Thousands of people across the region awoke Wednesday morning without electricity after severe weather swept through overnight.
Several locations in St. Mary's County were affected by the storm. St. Inigoes recorded wind gusts of 60 mph. The gusts reportedly blew the windows out of a barn in Bushwood. In Mechanicsville, the windy weather toppled trees and power lines. The straight-line winds tore shingles and siding from houses, blew down fences, and sheared off trees.

At the peak of the storm, about 20,000 customers lost power across the region. By 3 p.m., utility crews had cut that number to about 400.
According to thebaynet.com, residents of Riverside Farms in Great Mills, a St. Mary'sCountysubdivision, reported that a small tornado appears to have touched down in the front yard of several properties.The National Weather Service (web|news) reports there were no no tornadoes recorded in the region Tuesday night.
Other areas experienced stronger winds.
The NWS recorded a 74mph gust atReagan National Airport (web|news) about 12:30 a.m Tuesday. Andrews AFB recorded wind gusts of 66 mph and White Plains in Charles County recorded gusts of 73 mph.
