Patrick Swayze's cancer may have been brought on by alcohol abuse, a struggle he admitted in 2002.
According to Dr. George Fisher, "Patrick has a very limited amount of disease and he appears to be responding well to treatment thus far." Those most at risk of the disease may have a family history of it, be a smoker or have chronic pancreatitis, an inflammation of the pancreas that can be caused by alcohol abuse.
"I've lived on the edge my whole life. And, you know, as time goes on, you get tired of living on the edge. It's like it doesn't have to be that intense, you know," Swayze said.
According to Dr. John Carrol of Georgetown University Hospital, "People can have early growths and early tumors and they may be without symptoms for a good period of time."
There is technology that is very sensitive and can pick up early growths that may not be seen on the CAT scan, however, half are unknown causes such a gene defects.
One of the most common symptoms is also one of the most vague. Simply not feeling well is the most common symptom and the primary symptom is unexpected weight loss.
For people with advanced disease, a five year survival rate is unfortunately low, only in the five to 10 percent range.
