A jury has convicted an escaped jail inmate of capital murder in the deaths of a hospital security guard and a sheriff's deputy.

The Washington County Circuit Court jury deliberated for about 3 1/2 hours Tuesday before finding 26-year-old William Morva guilty of the August 2006 slayings in Montgomery County (web|news) .

The jury now will hear more testimony before it decides whether to set Morva's punishment at death or life in prison.

Jurors heard three days of testimony in the trial, which was moved from Montgomery County because of difficulty seating a jury.

Morva was convicted of overpowering a sheriff's deputy at a hospital and using the deputy's pistol to kill security guard Derrick McFarland. He also was found guilty of killing sheriff's Corporal Eric Sutphin one day later near the Virginia Tech campus.
