Prince William County (web|news) supervisors have passed a resolution that supports Congressman Robert Wittman's plan to seek federal money to install cameras in county police cars.

Police Chief Charlie Deane requested the cameras to protect the county against allegations of racial profiling as it enforces laws directed at illegal immigrants.

Officers have been ordered to check the citizenship status of people suspected of breaking the law if they are suspected of being in the country illegally.

It will cost $1.8 million to install cameras in the county's 270 patrol cars, and Wittman says he will request 80 percent federal funding.

It will cost an additional $1.2 million to monitor the camera footage.
