Japan's largest opposition party has decided to reject the government's second nomination of a former Finance Ministry official to head the nation's central bank. The Democratic Party of Japan said in a statement Tuesday on its Web site that it is set to reject Koji Tanami, now governor of Japan Bank for International Cooperation. The parliamentary vote is set for Wednesday. The party's decision makes it inevitable that the central bank will at least briefly lack a top leader when the current governor's term ends on Wednesday.
The opposition has been urging the government to pick someone not politically connected to the nation's powerful bureaucracy to ensure the independence of the Bank of Japan.
