Authorities responded to three reports of suspicious packages in downtown Washington this afternoon, tying up rush-hour traffic in the area.

D.C. police officer Quintin Peterson says none of the packages was found to be dangerous.

Peterson, a police spokesman, says the first package was discovered about 4 p.m. on the 3700 block of M Street northwest, and several roads in the area were closed while officers investigated.

A short time later, police were called to 14th and I streets in northwest for the report of a box with the words "test specimen." A suspicious package also was reported at the Mayflower Hotel.

Peterson says police have no reason to believe the suspicious package reports were related.
