A keeper at the National Zoo has been treated for a laceration on her leg after the zoo's giant panda cub grabbed onto her while attempting to play.
Zoo spokesman John Gibbons said the incident occurred yesterday during a routine feeding. The keeper was taken to the hospital as a precaution and released a short time later.
The incident remains under investigation.
Gibbons says the keeper brought Tai Shan indoors to place food in his yard. The panda re-entered the yard through an unsecured door and approached the keeper from behind, playfully grabbing onto her with his mouth.
The keeper radioed for help, and staffers distracted Tai Shan with food while the keeper was assisted out of the yard.
