Annual Census estimates show an increasing number of people are moving out of Prince George's County, Maryland.
The estimates show a net loss of more than 17,400 residents between July 2006 and July 2007.
The number is greater than the total number of births and new residents, causing the county's population to drop by 0.7 percent in the 12-month period. The county has been losing more residents each year since 2001.
Economist Joseph Valenza, with the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, says people moving out may be looking for a first home, or a larger second home, in more distant suburbs where land is cheaper.
Other Maryland and Virginia counties bordering Washington - including Arlington and Fairfax - also have lost residents, but the migration from those counties declined last year.
