The company that has been auditing D.C. finances for the past three years while a massive tax embezzlement scheme was underway now wants an extra $1.2 million to complete its latest review.
The auditor, BDO Seidman, says the alleged fraud has complicated its work.
But D.C. Council member Jim Graham says the company shouldn't be paid any more because the auditor missed clear warnings of theft from the city.
Two city employees have been charged with leading the tax scheme. Prosecutors say they stole at least $20 million from the D.C. tax office through fraudulent property tax refunds.
BDO Seidman's base fee for the city audit was $2.2 million. But the charges have increased over the past year - mostly for work at the D.C. Office of Tax and Revenue.
