Virginia transportation officials are delaying a plan to reduce the speed limit on a portion of Route 1 in Fairfax County (web|news) .

The postponement was granted after two county supervisors complained that the decision was made without consulting local authorities.

The affected area is a 4.5-mile stretch of highway extending from the Alexandria (web|news) city line south to Buckman Road. VDOT released an accident-prevention study in September which recommended reducing the speed limit from 45 miles per hour to 35 miles per hour.

VDOT planned to make the switch this month, before supervisors Jeff McKay and Gerald Hyland objected. VDOT says the project is now on hold pending further discussion with local officials.
