Those planning on driving to the Tidal Basin to see the cherry blossoms won't find parking in the small lot next to the paddle-boat dock this year.
The small lot with 180 spots will be closed. Instead, it will contain an information trailer, food stands, gift and book tents, portable restrooms and a first-aid area.
In previous years, the lot has caused gridlock that extends downtown as motorists jockey for the prime parking spots. This year, officials are trying to reroute traffic to Hains Point, where 800 free spots are available and a free "Blossom Shuttle" will take people to and from the Tidal Basin.
The shuttle will circulate daily beginning Friday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Officials say Metro is still the best way to see the blossoms.
