Reagan National Airport (web|news) is taking steps to alleviate parking congestion.
Equipment is now being set up to add a fifth level to the airport's parking garages, which will lead to more than 1,400 new spaces. The $54 million project is expected to be completed in 2010.
The airport's garages can now hold about 5,200 vehicles.
Last year, 18.7 million passengers took trips to or from Reagan National compared to about 15 million per year when the garages first opened.
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority says some existing parking spaces will be closed during construction. To alleviate overcrowding, the airports authority plans to open a temporary parking lot near the economy lot, with free shuttle service to the terminals.
