A Prince George's County Firefighter was hurt when he fell through the floor of a burning home in Bowie, Md.

The fireman had to be rescued from the house on Gwinnett Lane and residents of the neighborhood are calling him a hero.

The mayday call was bone chilling, a firefighter had fallen through a floor and into the basement right where the fire was blazing and he needed help fast.

"There's a sense of panic, but we are trained to respond and react to, hopefully, make that situation go away," said Maj. Rudy Thomas of the Prince George's County Fire Department.

Fortunately, the firefighters training paid off and the injured fireman made it out. He's a career firefighter stationed in Bowie and was on the first arriving engine to respond to the basement fire that erupted in a single family home.

He'll be okay, but the sight of him on that gurney made an impression on those watching.

"It's sad that would happen to him while he's trying to save somebody's home. That his life would be in such jeopardy and to think that they give so willingly," said neighbor, Sandra Williams.

"They walk right in, not realizing what they are walking into and I think that is very honorable. I appreciate them being in the service," said neighbor, Ivor Williams.

With the fireman safe, his colleagues got the fire out quickly.

Homeowner Carlston Williams said it's the second time he's had a home burn.

Firefighters say the fire was caused by something left on the stove top and the entire house will have to be gutted.

The good news is the firefighter is going to be just fine, suffering only minor cuts and bruises.
