Formal charges have been filed against one of the women who prosecutors say was intimately involved in the largest public corruption case in D.C. history.
Jayrece Turnbull was indicted on Monday on charges of receiving stolen property and aiding the scheme to embezzle more than $20 million from the D.C. tax office. She is the niece of Harriette Walters, the alleged mastermind in the scheme.
Prosecutors say they have found nearly $13 million in stolen money in bank accounts controlled by Turnbull.
According to documents, it was Turnbull who unknowingly led investigators to discover the scheme when she tried to cash a $410,000 check at a Bowie bank last July.
