Montgomery County (web|news) Inspector General Thomas Dagley says the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission is refusing to document how it has spent more than $2 billion authorized by the county over three years.
Dagley says he needs the information to protect county-approved funds from waste and fraud. But WSSC officials say they are not required by law to provide the information. The agency says it conducts its own audits, internally and through an outside company.
County Attorney Leon Rodriguez says Dagley lacks the authority to obtain the data.
The Prince George's County council has an auditor who has not requested similar data from WSSC but could do so, under state law.
WSSC is chartered by state law as an agency of both counties.
