Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and his former top aide will be arraigned on perjury and other felony charges Tuesday amid allegations of lying under oath about an alleged affair.
Kilpatrick and his former chief of staff, Christine Beatty, strongly denied having a romantic relationship during testimony in a lawsuit last August. However, text messages retrieved from Beatty's city-issued pager have revealed flirty and sometimes sexually explicit communication on where to meet and how to cover up the trysts.
Kilpatrick says he won't resign, despite calls from the City Council to step down. The Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News have also demanded his resignation.
A felony conviction would force Kilpatrick out of office under the city charter.
