Supporters of building a tunnel for a Metrorail extension through Tysons Corner have withdrawn a lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Transportation.

TysonsTunnel.org president Scott Monett says the lawsuit is no longer necessary now that the government appears to be on the verge of denying federal funding for the project.

The loss of federal funds would effectively kill the 23-mile extension to Dulles Airport.

Plans have called for building an elevated track through Tysons, something critics have said will do little to improve the area's chaotic layout, which is dangerous for pedestrians.

The suit had sought to block the rail extension if the underground proposal wasn't reconsidered.
