A rehabilitation project is being planned for a nearly eight-mile section of the George Washington Memorial Parkway.

Officials say the $54 million project is needed to fix potholes, alter dangerous sight lines and improve drainage between Spout Run and Interstate 495 in northern Virginia.

The parkway also needs an improved interchange at Route 123.

Garth Shull is the chief of technical services for the project. He says the parkway carries more traffic than it was designed to handle in the 1960s.

The first of two public information meetings on the project is set for Thursday in McLean. Shull says construction won't begin until at least 2010. The work could six years to complete.

Sight lines and the intersection at Rt 123 are fine so long as people aren't doing 70 MPH. The biggest problem with the GW parkway north of Spout Run are that some of the drain grates are far lower than the road surface creating serious pothole-like hazards for those who drift into them.
