Police are hunting for two teens after they say the duo stole a car from a gas station, while a child was in the back seat.

A woman was pumping gas into her green Pontiac Grand Prix at the Exxon gas station at St. Barnabas and Clifton Road in Temple Hills. Police said two men jumped into the car and stole it as the woman pumped gas and her two-year-old nephew was in the back seat.

The aunt was covered in gas after the stolen car ripped the gas pump off. A sergeant with the D.C. Air National Guard saw the car speeding down the road and suspected it was stolen. He followed the car to Colebrooke Drive where he saw the teens get out of the car and get into a dark blue Charger, also filled .

As the sergeant was on the phone with police, he got out of his car, walked up to the still-running stolen car and found the scared boy.

"I look in the rear seat and there was a child in there. I'm a father myself so I know if my child was in that seat, I'd want somebody to stop," said Sgt. Lamar Elliott.

"He wasn't crying. He wasn't talking. I asked him what his name was was he okay he just didn't want to speak," said Elliott.

Elliott said he is not a hero, but there is a lesson for all.

"It's important to look out for one another regardless of who you are; look out for other people for in the community."

Prince George's County Police are calling the sergeant a hero. The aunt was reunited with her nephew shortly after the ordeal ended. Police are still searching for their teen-aged suspects.
