A state Senate committee has approved a bill granting an exception to the state's new smoking ban.
The legislation would allow smoking on enclosed decks or other outdoor structures at bars in Baltimore County.
The House version of the bill is sponsored by Delegate Joseph Minnick, who co-owns a tavern in Dundalk. He says he has lost business since the statewide smoking ban began Feb. 1. Senate sponsor Norman Stone says most people didn't realize the ban would apply to tentlike structures or awnings with flaps that keep out the cold.
Health advocates and Baltimore County Executive James Smith are opposed to the legislation.
