The Washington area's population climbed slightly last year.
According to Census Bureau estimates, the region gained 45,860 residents between July 2006 and July 2007. The increase of nine-tenths of a percent is just under the national growth rate.
Migration to and from other parts of the United States led to a net decrease of nearly 36,000 Washington-area residents, but that was more than offset by births and migration from other countries.
Growth in D.C. and the Virginia suburbs was slightly ahead of growth in the Maryland suburbs.
The Washington region ranks eighth among the nation's metropolitan areas, with a population of more than 5.3 million.
