Prince William County (web|news) 's police chief will meet Thursday night with the Mexican Embassy's consul general and the county's immigrant community.

They will talk about concerns stemming from the county's new policy on illegal immigration.

Mexican Consul Enrique Escorza says there are misconceptions about the policy, which requires police to check the legal status of suspected illegal immigrants questioned for a crime or traffic violation.

Escorza says some immigrants believe they can't report a crime out of concern that they will be asked to show they have documents to be in the country. Escorza says that is not the case.

A Prince William County police spokeswoman says tonight's meeting is one in dozens of attempts by Police Chief Charlie Deane to "get out the facts" about the immigration crackdown.
