BETHESDA, Md. - Two Red Line Metro trains derailed at the Bethesda Station, officials confirmed Friday. No one was hurt, according to Montgomery County
(web | news) fire officials.
Metro officials say a six-car train carrying 84 people experienced brake problems about 4:30 p.m. Friday. They say another train, with no riders, arrived to move the first train along.
"There was something on the rail that we got stuck over," said Kate Jackson, a Metro passenger. "And because of that we kind of got joggled around."
Officials found the wheels on one of the first train's cars had come off the tracks. Then, as the second train attempted the rescue, one of its cars also came of the tracks.
"A broken piece of rail was the cause of both derailments actually," said Candace Smith, a Metro spokesperson.
A third train was dispatched to the scene to get the derailed trains back on the tracks.
Trains are now sharing the same track between Medical Center and Friendship Heights, according to Metro. Metro officials tell riders to expect 20-minute delays. Free shuttle buses will stop at the Friendship Heights, Bethesda and Medical Center stations.
Metro says delays are expected through the weekend.
