Higher Taxes Could Force the Closure of Boardwalk Rides
posted 8:09 am Fri April 27, 2007 - OCEAN CITY, Md.
Higher taxes are threatening one of the oldest businesses on the Ocean City boardwalk.
The Trimper family has operated Trimper Rides since 1890 but the company has been hit with soaring tax assessments and family members say this could be the final season for the rides and games.
Vice President Doug Trimper tells The (Baltimore) Sun that the 14 family shareholders will meet after the summer season to consider selling most of the property.
Former mayor and current state delegate Jim Mathias says state and local leaders would be willing to consider tax relief for the business.
The assessed value of Trimper properties rose from $24 million in 2004 to nearly $63 million this year. The family is also upset that Worcester County is looking at allowing a competing amusement park to open in the county.
