(Sports Network) - Beginning in August, college coaches will
no longer be able to send text messages to recruits.
The NCAA's Division I Board of Directors approved the proposal. Several Board
members mentioned that many members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee
called the practice of texting intrusive and said it was overused. The
student-athletes convinced Board members that text-messaging and similar forms
of communication were not appropriate in relation to communication between a
coach and a prospect.
The proposal eliminates all forms of electronic communication with the
exception of e-mails and faxes. However, the Board left open the possibility
of considering proposals related to this issue in the future.
