School Crime Data Hard to Come By
posted 12:34 pm Sun April 29, 2007 - Rockville, MD
Parents in the Washington area who want to know what kind of crimes have been committed by students at their children's schools might have a hard time getting that information.
Few school districts in the region regularly publish that kind of data.
Montgomery County officials recently announced that they were starting work on an annual School Safety Report. They plan to start publishing it in the 2008-2009 school year.
Among the area's largest school systems, only Fairfax County reports school crime data online. Anne Arundel County publishes a hard-copy student discipline report. But schools in Prince George's, Howard, Loudoun and Prince William counties publish no such document.
School systems in Virginia and Maryland report student crime statistics to their state education departments. The state agencies make some of that information available to parents, but neither state offers data on individual schools.
