The Arts and Technology Academy Public Charter School was placed on lockdown Monday morning while D.C. Police investigated a body found near a stairwell on the campus grounds.
Police were called to the school after neighbors reported hearing gunshots and a security guard found the body of James Campbell around 8 a.m. Monday morning.
A school spokeswoman says classes continued as normal and all police activity occurred in a remote exterior section of the campus, away from the students. She also said a note will go home with students to help warn parents of the day events.

Investigators believe Campbell died of self-inflicted gun shot wounds after killing his girlfriend in her Southeast apartment. Police say Campbell apparently called his girlfriend's family, saying things the family found alarming. The family went to the woman's apartment and found her two children unharmed but not Campbell or his girlfriend. The family then called the police who discovered the body of Campbell's girlfriend in the closet.
