A blaze that devoured the roof of the D.C. Public Library's Georgetown branch is under firefighters' control.
The library was undergoing renovations when the fire started at about 12:20 p.m. Many library employees cried and hugged each other while thinking of the historical documents and art that were inside.
The library contained the Peabody Room, which houses a collection of maps, photos, art and documents on every house in Georgetown. Archivist Jerry McCoy says the artifacts aren't replaceable and in many cases, no copies exist.

The fire comes on the same day as the historic Eastern Market on Capitol Hill suffered major damage in an early morning blaze.
