George Mason University men's basketball coach Jim Larranaga has interviewed for the same position at Providence College.
Providence asked for and received permission from George Mason to interview Larranaga, according to a GMU official. Larranaga is a 1971 Providence graduate.
Larranaga just completed his 12th season with the Patriots, leading them to their second NCAA Tournament appearance in three seasons. George Mason lost to Notre Dame 68-50 in the first round this year. In 2006, the Patriots made perhaps the most magical run in the NCAA Tournament, reaching the Final Four as a No. 11 seed. The team finished 27-8 and ranked eighth in the final coaches poll.
Larranaga has compiled a record of 230-141 with the Patriots. He is the Colonial Athletic Association all-time leader in wins with 151. Prior to arriving at Fairfax, Va. school, Larranaga coached 11 seasons at Bowling Green.
He is currently under contract with George Mason through the 2012 season.
