An upcoming Washington Nationals promotion involving magnets could cause problems with Metro farecards.

The team will give away season schedule magnets and "Curly W" car magnets next Thursday to the first 20,000 fans who arrive at the ballpark.

That's prompting a warning to Metro passengers. The transit agency says if a magnet gets too close to a paper farecard, it can demagnetize it, leaving it useless.

Because of the potential for problems, the agency will hang a banner at the Navy Yard station before the game that reads, "Your farecard and magnets don't mix."

If a paper farecard is demagnetized, a passenger will have to take it to a Metro sales office to get it fixed or get another one.
