Calls and donations are pouring into the office of ALIVE, a food bank in Alexandria (web|news) that fell victim to an unimaginable crime.

Last week, a volunteer discovered 1,000 pounds of canned goods including meat, tuna and peanut butter were taken from a city-owned warehouse.

That's where ALIVE stores food for an end-of-the month program to help people running low on food stamps.

Police say there were no signs of forced entry and the goods were taken sometime between the end of February and the end of March.

"Shame on them. There's no rhyme or reason for doing that," said volunteer Stephen D'Antoni.

People across the country are calling to see how they can help. Chris Morton got word of the crime and headed straight to the store.

"I do business here, I live here. Part of the community when growing up relied on places like this - it's just the right thing to do," said Morton.

Despite the $2,000 loss of food, executive director Ken Naser will continue making daily deliveries to Alexandria's neediest residents. "After 39 years in business, ALIVE will keep going and be stronger for it," he said.

ALIVE will be collecting donations Saturday, April 5 from noon-3pm at its office in the First Christian Church at 2723 King St., Alexandria, Va.

On Tuesday, April 8, The Holy Spirit School in Annandale, VA will host a food drive at 8 am as a school project.
