The robbery suspect shot by an off-duty D.C. police officer overnight has died, according to police.
Investigators say the officer opened fire at a gas station on Brentwood Road in Northeast after the suspect tried to rob him.
Police Cadets scoured the area near the lowest price gas station in Northeast looking for evidence.
"He picked the wrong one. That's all I can say. He picked the wrong one," said neighbor Leroy Byrd.
Leroy Byrd has lived in this area since 1968. He was stunned by the shooting, and the fact that the robbery target was an off-duty Metropolitan police officer. The officer was putting gas in his car, when he was approached by the would-be robber.
Police say the man was armed, but they are not indicating whether or not he fired on the officer. The officer, however, did fire his weapon shooting the suspect.
According to police, the senior-level officer has been with the force for 33 years and was not hurt. Police are talking with people who were near the 900 block of Brentwood around midnight, when the shooting happened and neighbors, like Byrd, are concerned.
"It will continue to go along, and it's just hard to say what can be done to curtail it," said Byrd.
Police are not identifying the officer involved, since he's considered a witness in the case. The identity of the man who was killed is expected to be released later today once his family has been notified.
