The Frederick County Commissioners have voted to seek a safety review of Army Biodefense laboratory expansion plans at Fort Detrick in Frederick.
The board voted 4-1 to ask U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski to request a review by the National Research Council, a branch of the National Academy of Sciences. Mikulski issued a statement Thursday saying she would forward the request to the National Academy. Mikulski says that public safety must be a top priority.
The request reflects concern among some citizens that the approved environmental assessment for the project did not adequately address the risk of deadly biological agents escaping from the lab.
The Fort Detrick citizen support group says the review will delay the project and is being sought by people who are anti-military.
