Severe storms have brought tornadoes, rain and snow to the nation's heartland.

A band of storms stretching from Colorado to Texas could dump up to 10 inches of snow. High winds from the system knocked out power to a quarter-million people.

In Missouri, three to four inches of rain fell in just a few hours yesterday. Flash floods have swamped parts of nearly 200 roads across the state. Rescuers using ropes and life jackets evacuated several people from the offices of a newspaper in southwestern Missouri. Flooding is expected in parts of the state still reeling from high water last month.

At least 100 homes and businesses in Texas and some 200 buildings in Oklahoma have been damaged by high winds. A Texas gas-field worker lost an arm when a possible tornado struck a trailer.

A twister in Arkansas has destroyed a barn and killed several animals.
