Montgomery County (web|news) officials are scrapping plans for Ride On buses to display messages welcoming Pope Benedict XVI (web|news|bio) amid concerns over a public entity welcoming a religious leader.

On Monday, Ride On buses began their routes with their electronic message boards scrolling: "Welcome Pope Benedict."

Patrick Lacefield, a spokesman for the county executive, says officials thought Metrobuses would have a similar message. Metro is offering a commemorative pass, but the transit agency says there are no plans for a welcome message.

Lacefield says the message was pulled after officials learned of riders' concerns and checked with Metro. He says they don't want to give the impression of favoring one religion over another.
