About 400 people have filled stands on the tarmac at Andrews Air Force Base, awaiting the arrival of Pope Benedict XVI.
Among them are about 100 parishioners from area Catholic churches. Many of them said they won lotteries for the chance to see Benedict arrive.
Catholic school students and military personnel also are waiting for the pope. A high school band is performing as people wave small American flags and yellow-and-white papal flags.
The pope is expected to arrive at the base a few miles southeast of Washington later Tuesday.
Imelda Laforteza, who is 38, goes to St. Peter's Catholic Church in Waldorf. She says the pope's visit is "a blessing for all of America."
