Prince George's County police shot and killed a man Saturday morning while responding to a domestic dispute call in Hyattsville.
The man reportedly threatened officers with a knife and a handgun, prompting them to fire the fatal shots in the 2300 block of Calvert Street.
Hugo Enrique Lopez was shot by police around 10 a.m. on his front porch.
"He was a good man," said Fausto Palacios, who is the brother-in-law of 38-year-old Lopez.
"It certainly appears that this was a troubled person doing drugs and drinking all night long, and added to that, he raised a firearm at three uniformed PG county police officers after firing a weapon in his own house," said Maj. Kevin Davis of District one in Prince George's County.
Police say Lopez' sister, also inside the house with a child, called 911 in a panic to report that her brother was acting irrationally.
"Theres a lot of folks out on a beautiful Saturday morning, so not only was he a threat to the police officers here on the scene, he was a threat to this entire community," said Maj. Davis.
Lopez' sister and the child managed to escape the home safely and neighbors say its fortunate no one else was hurt.
"Normally there would have been kids out there, and again I don't know how far bullet spray can go, but I could've been cutting the grass or mowing the lawn," said neighbor Eddie Pinkham.
But Lopez' family members and friends are left wondering if a call for help had to end in the shooting death of their loved one.
"Somebody called the cops to try and calm down the situation, and instead of calming the situation something like this happened," said Palacios.
