According to Metropolitan Police, a total of ten people were shot--four of them fatal--in the District over the weekend.

The latest string of shootings started Friday night when police say a person was shot at 11:30 p.m. in the 100 block of Galveston Road in Southwest. According to police, he is expected to live.

Around midnight, police responded to the 2700 block of Langston Place in Southeast where, according to police, two people sustained non-life threatening gun shot wounds.

The first homicide occurred just 45 minutes later. Seven District units were called to the hospital where an adult male said that he was shot at 3900 8th Street, SE, at the intersection of Yuma Street. Upon arrival officers located 31-year-old Kenneth Walley, of the 3900 block of 8th Street, S.E., suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the body. He was transported to the Washington Hospital Center's MedStar Unit where he was pronounced dead.

It was later learned that Walley, who have been reportedly shot at 8th and Yuma Streets, drove himself to Greater Southeast hostpital.

Another adult male was shot and killed at 3044 Stanton Road, SE, near the intersection of Elvans Road at 12:58 a.m., according to the MPD. Upon arrival officers located 28-year-old Billy Evans Middleton, of the 3000 block of Stanton Road, S.E., suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to the head. D.C. Fire medical emergency personnel responded to the scene, but found no signs consistent with life. He was taken to the Office of the D.C. Examiner for an autopsy.

Following the above incidents, police say  Melvin R. Seals, of the 4600 block of Foote Street, NE, was shot and killed at the intersection of Morse Street and Montello Avenue in Northeast at 2:05 a.m. According to a neighbor, police were on the scene until 7:45 a.m.

At approximately 4:00 a.m., police were called to the 2400 block of Elvans Road, S.E. for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival officers located 20-year-old Eric Woods, of Capital Heights, Md., suffering from apparent multiple gunshot wounds to the body.

A total of three other people sustained injuries during two other shootings early Saturday. One of the shootings occurred on Eldens Street in Southeast and the other on Monticello Avenue in Northeast.

D.C. police plan to increase patrols citywide after the recent spike in violent crime.

D.C. has had 50 homicides so far this year. That's the same number as this point last year. But the month of April alone has brought 18 killings and officials are worried the typical spike in violence over the summer is starting early.

Assistant Police Chief Diane Groomes says they will pull police administrators into patrol duties to help expand their presence in the city.

There is no word on suspects at this time in any of the above incidents. Police say they are investigating the shootings as homicides and do not believe they are all connected.

Help me understand how allowing guns unn DC would curb this or any other violence in DC. Do you really think the victims would have been eligible to own a gun? Or, do you think the victims were law abiding citizens? this is horrible but guns will not stop the violence, just cause more.
