Dozens of Montgomery County (web|news) residents say it's not too late to stop construction of the controversial six-lane Intercounty Connector highway.
About 80 residents of the Derwood community rallied Saturday against construction of the 18-mile highway that will cut through Maryland's Washington suburbs. They blame Governor Martin O'Malley for allowing the $2.4 billion project to proceed. They called their rally "O'Malley's March."
Derwood is one of the first areas to be affected by the highway's construction. Protesters looked somberly on a swath of trees that have been cut down. Residents say the reality of the loss of so many trees has inspired their activism.
The highway is scheduled to open in segments beginning in 2010. A federal court recently cleared the way for the highway, but an appeal is pending.
