A beloved pet is off of doggie death row in the District. A judge released Bubba the yellow lab Tuesday and ordered him out of the city for good.
Bubba spent one month in lock up at the pound, but his owners finally convinced a judge to spare his life.
Moments after a judge granted Bubba a reprieve his owners whisked him out of the city.
"He is free as long as he leaves the District and never returns," said Nadine Isvarin, owner of Bubba.
On April 2, Bubba got loose, and a neighbor says he bit her Shar Pei. The owner of the injured dog complained to the city.
"In the District, if someone says your dog bit another dog or person without provocation, you could lose your dog forever," said Deborah Hines, attorney for Bubba.
Isvarin arrived at a hearing for Bubba, hobbled and bandaged. She said a Pitbull at the pound attacked her and Bubba while she was visiting him. The health department maintained Bubba really bit Isvarin and she released the Pit Bull, so she could blame it.
"That is ridiculous. That would mean I would put myself and my dog in danger," said Isvarin.
The stress of having their dog in the pound, and legal bills veering upwards of fifteen thousand dollars has prompted Isvarin and Dorment to settle.
"We had to bring it to an end it was just proving too much," said John Dorment, owner of Bubba.
But it appears his owners will soon join Bubba in exile.
We are putting our house up for sale. And the District will lose two good residents because the city health department is so vindictive," said Isvarin.
